Fracture of a solid material occurs due to the breakdown of molecular bonds under external stress. Simulation of fracture from first principles requires computation at two levels of description:

  1. the molecular level to capture disruption of lattice bonds
  2. the continuum level to capture the deformation of the lattice due to external stress
